July 4, 2008 – It is Friday, July 4th, Americans throughout the world celebrates their independence day. There is parties, festivities, parades.

This year I celebrated US Independence Day in the City of Horta, Azores. Horta, capital of Island of Faial, was celebrating 175 years of being nominated as a City and the it was also the hosting the remembrance that 50 years ago it took place the eruption of the Vulcan of the Capelinhos that caused one of largest exodus of human history.

a joint celebration of the officials of Horta and the American Officials was  held  that also included hot dogs, coca cola and the US Air Force band playing American Dix land music.

The summer is hot in this 67 square miles isle, dominated by the highest mountain in Portuguese territory – the isle of Pico.

A walk from the hotel overlooking the marina, the largest in the northern Atlantic opened in 1987, through the small streets give us the great view of the historic building of the Igreja de Sao Salvador da Matriz.

A large statue of the first president of the Portuguese Republic Manuel de Arriaga dominates the beginning of the marina that receives over a 1000 yacht boats on a yearly basis.

US TV Star Meredith Vieira is one of the best known daughters of the island of Faial. Recently Ms Vieira took a trip back in time, visited the isle to connect for the first time with cousins and shared with the world the beauty of Faial.
